Traditional Dutch Harbour Towns and Villages

Along the IJsselmeer and in the Waterland region, you’ll find several historic harbour towns where life has been connected to the water for centuries. The Traditional Dutch Harbour route takes you past these beautiful places.

With bus lines 314 and 316, you can easily travel between Amsterdam, Monnickendam, Volendam, Edam, and Hoorn. Along the way, you’ll discover how these towns developed around fishing, trade, and shipping.

1. Amsterdam

The route starts at Amsterdam Central Station, where you can easily board bus line 316 towards Waterland. Within a short time, the cityscape transforms into open countryside, dikes, and water. The contrast between city and region makes the start of this route special.
From Amsterdam, you travel directly to some of the most beautiful harbor towns in North Holland.

2. Monnickendam

Monnickendam is a true gem. This historic Zuiderzee town was granted city rights over 650 years ago and has a rich history of trade and seafaring. The marinas of Monnickendam are the largest in the Netherlands. During your visit, enjoy the beautiful views over the harbors or reserve a spot on board a sailing ship from the Brown Fleet. Would you rather go canoeing, swimming, or surfing? Then you should head to the Hemmeland recreation area!

The fishing village on the IJsselmeer. From Monnickendam, you continue your journey with line 316 to Volendam, perhaps the most famous fishing village in the Netherlands. The harbor and the dike form the vibrant heart of the village. From the quay, you have a view over the IJsselmeer and can see fishing boats and sailing boats entering the harbor.

This takes about 1.5 hours but can also be made longer or shorter. End your day at the central square of the city: De Roode Steen. The living room of Hoorn full of cozy terraces and restaurants.
