Along the IJsselmeer and in the Waterland region, you’ll find several historic harbour towns where life has been connected to the water for centuries. The Traditional Dutch Harbour route takes you past these beautiful places.
With bus lines 314 and 316, you can easily travel between Amsterdam, Monnickendam, Volendam, Edam, and Hoorn. Along the way, you’ll discover how these towns developed around fishing, trade, and shipping.
The fishing village on the IJsselmeer. From Monnickendam, you continue your journey with line 316 to Volendam, perhaps the most famous fishing village in the Netherlands. The harbor and the dike form the vibrant heart of the village. From the quay, you have a view over the IJsselmeer and can see fishing boats and sailing boats entering the harbor.
End your day in Hoorn. The current harbors of Hoorn have their origins in the Golden Age. Take a walk along five different harbors of Hoorn with the special ‘Harbor Tour Hoorn’. This takes about 1.5 hours but can also be made longer or shorter. End your day at the central square of the city: De Roode Steen. The living room of Hoorn full of cozy terraces and restaurants.
